This season just before spring can be challenging to maintain heart health. Cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict, raising blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart problems. With a few proactive measures, you can keep your heart healthy all season long. 

1. Layer Up and Stay Warm 

Cold weather puts extra strain on your heart. Dress in layers to retain body heat and avoid frostbite. A hat, gloves, and insulated shoes are needed if the temperature is cold, as most heat loss occurs through the head and extremities. 

2. Prioritize Your Workouts 

Exercise is crucial for heart health, but chilly temperatures might limit outdoor activities. Try these options: 

  • Indoor Activities: Yoga, Pilates, and home cardio routines are great alternatives. Use online videos or fitness apps to stay motivated. You can also walk indoor malls to get lots of steps in! 
  • Walking: Bundle up and take brisk walks. Walking strengthens the heart, and the fresh air can boost your mood. Take a neighbor or friend! 

3. Stay Hydrated 

It is easy to forget to drink water in colder months, but dehydration can strain your heart. Keep a water bottle handy and opt for herbal teas to stay warm and hydrated. 

4. Heart-Healthy Diet 

Comfort foods are tempting, but balance is key. Focus on heart-healthy foods like: 

  • Oats, nuts, and seeds for healthy fats and fiber. 
  • Seasonal vegetables like kale, carrots, and squash. 
  • Fatty fish (like salmon) for omega-3 fatty acids. 
    Limit your intake of salt, sugary drinks, and heavy meals, which can raise blood pressure and cholesterol. 

5. Monitor Your Heart 

Pay attention to warning signs like chest pain or shortness of breath, especially if you have a history of heart problems. Do not over-exert yourself — take breaks and use proper techniques to remove snow and ice. 

By staying warm, active, and mindful of your health, you can keep your heart strong throughout the season.
