What is Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy?

BFR is an advanced rehabilitation technique that is scientifically-proven to:

  • Minimize muscle loss after surgery or injury
  • Build strength safely when patients cannot lift heavy weights due to recovery phase
  • Support recovery for patients with painful or arthritic joints

Commonly used after orthopedic surgeries such as ACL reconstruction and rotator cuff repair, BFR can also benefit those who are unable to perform traditional strengthening exercises. Your physical therapist or physician will work with you to determine if BFR is right for your recovery plan.

How does BFR work?

Specialized cuffs are applied to the arm or leg to safely restrict blood flow return. The patient feels like they are wearing a blood pressure cuff. This creates a natural physiological response, stimulating muscle growth and strength, even with lighter exercise.

What conditions can BFR help with?

BFR can be especially helpful for patients recovering from:

  • Orthopedic surgeries
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Painful or arthritic joints

Is BFR safe?
Yes. When administered by a trained clinician, BFR is safe. Your care team will help you determine if BFR is right for you.
