Emerson Health, in partnership with Shields Health, offers amyloid PET/CT imaging to help evaluate patients with memory loss, cognitive changes or suspected Alzheimer’s disease.

An amyloid PET/CT scan is a specialized brain imaging test that can detect beta-amyloid plaques—one of the hallmark changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The results can provide important information to your neurologist or other health care provider as part of a comprehensive evaluation for cognitive decline.

What Is an Amyloid PET/CT Scan?

Amyloid PET/CT uses a small amount of a radioactive tracer that binds to beta-amyloid plaques in the brain. PET imaging then shows whether significant amyloid plaque is present.

The scan does not diagnose Alzheimer’s disease on its own. Instead, your provider considers the results along with your symptoms, medical history, cognitive testing and other diagnostic information to better understand what may be causing memory or thinking changes.

Why Might My Doctor Recommend an Amyloid PET Scan?

Your doctor may recommend amyloid PET/CT when additional information is needed to determine whether Alzheimer’s disease may be contributing to cognitive symptoms.

Amyloid testing may also be part of the evaluation process for certain newer Alzheimer’s treatments that target beta-amyloid. These therapies require confirmation of amyloid pathology before treatment begins.

What to Expect

Amyloid PET/CT is a noninvasive imaging option for identifying amyloid plaque in the brain. A small amount of imaging tracer is given through an IV before the scan.

The PET/CT imaging portion generally takes approximately 10–20 minutes. Your Shields care team will provide instructions about timing, preparation and what to expect before your appointment.
