What to Expect at Your First Appointment

During your first visit, your surgeon will:

  • Perform a physical exam
  • Determine whether imaging, such as ultrasound or CT scan, is needed
  • Discuss whether watchful waiting or surgery is recommended
  • Explain your repair options
  • Review expected recovery time
  • Answer your questions about pain control, activity restrictions, work, driving, lifting, and insurance

In many patients with typical signs and symptoms, groin hernia diagnosis can be confirmed by physical examination alone, though ultrasound, CT, or MRI may be needed in select cases.

What to Expect from Surgery and Recovery

Many straightforward hernia repairs are outpatient procedures, meaning you can usually go home the same day. More complex repairs may require a longer stay.

Your recovery will depend on the type of hernia, the type of repair, your overall health, and the physical demands of your work and daily life.

In general:

  • Many patients are encouraged to walk soon after surgery.
  • Some patients return to desk work or light activity within several days.
  • Heavy lifting and strenuous activity may be restricted for several weeks.
  • More complex or recurrent repairs may require a longer recovery period.
