Safety Highlight of the Week: Nurse’s Observation Leads to Safety Upgrades |
A nurse’s careful review of the Special Care Nursery procedure room led to important infection-prevention improvements, including new hand sanitizer and surgical scrub dispensers. These changes strengthen hand hygiene and support safer procedures. |

| Antimicrobial Stewardship |
What is it? Antimicrobial stewardship protects and preserves the effectiveness of antimicrobial medications. It ensures the right drug, dose, duration, and route are selected based on the patient and the infection or pathogen we are treating. Everyone plays a role in preserving these vital medications for current and future patients.
Why It Matters Overprescribing or misuse of antimicrobials can lead to: -
Increased risk of antimicrobial-resistant organisms (e.g., MRSA) in both patients and the community
- Clostridioides difficile infections, caused by disruption of normal gut flora
- Side effects, from stomach upset to heart arrhythmias
-
Drug interactions with other medications
- Higher costs for patients and the hospital
How Emerson Practices Antimicrobial Stewardship -
Pharmacist review of all antibiotic prescriptions
- Use of infectious disease treatment pathways and guidelines
- Education for patients and providers
- Ongoing monitoring of bacterial resistance patterns
-
Tracking and reporting hospital-wide antimicrobial use
Our Team
Emerson’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program is co-led by Eleanor Broadbent, PharmD, and Scott Paparello, DO, in collaboration with Infectious Diseases, Pharmacy, Microbiology, and Infection Prevention. |

Squeezing the most out of summer one sip at a time! With school around the corner, mornings are getting busier, but that doesn’t mean breakfast should suffer. Grab a quick, nutritious smoothie loaded with fruits, leafy greens, and a little extra boost like chia seeds or nut butter—and fuel up on the go. Your future self (and your kids) will thank you! |
| | Supporting Individuals with Autism |
Members of our nutrition services, environmental services, and biomedical engineering teams came together to organize a raffle supporting Minute Arc. Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of those who participated, they raised $1,232! |
