Nuclear Imaging

Your doctor may order a nuclear imaging test to:

• Check for cancer in bones or other parts of the body
• Stage cancer to see how advanced it is
• Evaluate heart disease
• Look for brain conditions, including memory loss, seizures, or movement disorders like Parkinson’s
• Detect early signs of Alzheimer’s disease
• Check for gallbladder problems
• Measure how well your thyroid or parathyroid glands are working
• Assess kidney function

This test provides essential information that other imaging tests, like X-rays or MRIs, cannot always show.

During a nuclear imaging scan, you will receive a small amount of a radioactive substance called a tracer. This helps create clear images of the area being tested. The tracer may be given as a pill, an injection, or a liquid to swallow.

Depending on the type of scan, your test may happen immediately or several hours later. Sometimes, you may need to return the next day for additional images.

During the scan:

• You will lie on a table while a special camera takes pictures.
• It is important to stay still so the images are clear.
• Most scans take between 20 and 45 minutes.

The test is painless, and the tracer is safe. It leaves your body naturally within 24 hours.

Your doctor will give you specific instructions based on the type of nuclear imaging test you need. Here are some general guidelines:

• Food & Drink: You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test.
• Medications: Tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you take. Some may need to be adjusted before the test.
• Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes and avoid jewelry or metal accessories, as they can interfere with the scan.
• Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or nursing, inform your doctor before the test.

Once the test is complete, you can return to normal activities. The tracer will leave your body naturally through urine or stool within 24 hours. Drinking plenty of water can help speed up this process.
