Bone Density Scan

A doctor may recommend a Bone Density Scan if:

• You are at risk for osteoporosis or other bone diseases.
• You have a history of fractures or bone injuries.
• You are going through menopause or have other health conditions affecting your bones.
• You are taking medications that may weaken your bones.

The Bone Density Scan is a simple and non-invasive test. Here is what happens:

1. Positioning: You will lie down on a comfortable table while a small scanner passes over your body.
2. Duration: The test typically takes about 10–15 minutes.
3. No Pain: The scan is painless and does not involve injections or contrast dyes.

Before your test, it’s helpful to:

• Avoid wearing clothes with metal, such as zippers or buttons.
• Inform the technologist if you are pregnant or suspect you might be.
• Let your doctor know if you have had a recent X-ray or other imaging tests, as these might affect the results.

Once your scan is complete, your doctor will review the results with you. If any concerns are found, your doctor will discuss treatment options. In most cases, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to review the results and next steps.
