Preparing for Surgery
Pre-surgical testing and what to expect: Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Before your surgery, or your child’s surgery, our care team will work with you to ensure your safety.
What to Expect
Our team takes the following steps to ensure you are prepared for your surgery.
- Initial Phone Call: A nurse practitioner will call to review your medical history, medications, allergies, and other important health details.
- Gathering Medical Information: When needed, we will collect health records from your doctors, including test results, to give your surgeon and anesthesiologist a complete picture of your health.
- Pre-Surgical Testing: You may need tests like blood work, X-rays, or a CT scan before surgery. We will arrange and review any necessary testing.
- Pre-Surgical Instructions: You will receive clear instructions on:
- When to stop eating or drinking before surgery
- Whether to adjust or stop certain medications
- Important details about advance directives and choosing a health care proxy
- Preoperative Coaching: Preparing for surgery also means planning for recovery. Our nurses offer practical advice, like:
- Buying smaller bags of pet food if lifting is restricted
- Renting a recliner if you need to sleep upright after surgery
