| Understanding Job Competency |
What is Job Competency?
Job competency defines the expectations of your role, including how you perform your duties, uphold safety and infection control standards, demonstrate professionalism and initiative, and provide quality service to patients and colleagues. Inpatient and clinical areas may have additional competencies for high-risk or low-frequency procedures. How is Competency Assessed? Managers assess competency: - Before hire
-
During orientation
- Annually, during performance reviews
- Assessments may include direct observation, education modules with post-tests, and evaluation of job performance.
How is Competency Maintained? You maintain competency through ongoing: - In-service training
-
HealthStream education modules
- Department-specific annual activities
- Clear communication and continuing education
Competency ensures that every patient receives consistent, safe, and high-quality care, every time. |
